Enforcement of Non-EU court judgments and rulings in Germany
There exist many states where no bilateral treaty or multinational convention for the recognition and the enforcement of foreign judgments in place. This applies for major trade partner states as the USA, China and Japan.
The United States is not a party to any bilateral treaty or multinational convention concerning the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments. As there is no bilateral agreement in force between USA and Germany, all American judgments must be recognized formally by a German court (so called "exequatur") in order to be executable by the German execution authorities.
The main procedures before the German courts are described here.
